U.S. Marshalls seize rodent-infested food products

Rodent infestation of food products is a serious problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. The spread of these diseases can occur directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine, or saliva, or through rodent bites. Humans can also pick up diseases carried by rodents indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent. The primary strategy to prevent human exposure to rodent diseases is effective rodent control.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has moved to prevent the distribution of food from a rodent-infested facility in Durham, North Carolina. In response to a request from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Marshals have seized all FDA-regulated food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination or other filth being held at the Durham, North Carolina, warehouse of CFSD, Inc., which has been doing business as Chan’s Food Service. A warrant was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina for the seizure of these food products.

The federal government's complaint alleged that the food products are adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, because these products have been held under insanitary conditions wherein they may have become contaminated by filth. From July 25, 2011 through Aug. 3, 2011 an FDA inspection discovered evidence of an active and widespread rodent infestation in CFSD, Inc.’s warehouse.
The FDA investigators are reported to have observed "rodent nesting sites, numerous rodent excreta pellets on and around food products, rodent gnawed containers of food, as well as one live and eight dead rodents in the vicinity of food product storage. They also observed food product spills, open boxes of food, rotten food items, trash throughout the facility, and noted many potential entryways for pests, including open doors, gaps in doors, broken windows and a hole in the outside wall."
